If the transmission is not working in your car, you will have a variety of problems. To help you determine this, below are some of these problems, as well as tips on getting your transmission repaired if it is found to be bad.

Signs of Trouble

One sign that that your transmission is going bad is you will feel it slip when your car is changing gears while you are driving it. If you have a clutch, you will hear grinding when you change gears manually. You may also feel your car moving, such as swaying, when it changes gears.

You will also hear sounds, such as clunking or humming, coming from your car's engine. This is especially true when your car is in neutral. The RPMs will go up higher than they normally do when your car is changing gears. For example, it will sound like you are pressing on the gas while you are in neutral, revving up your engine.

If you check the transmission fluid, it will likely look darker than normal and smell burnt. You will also notice it takes longer for your car to start up. For example, when you press the gas pedal, it will hesitate before it starts moving. This is also true when you drive your car in reverse.

Repairing the Transmission

If you have these problems and find that it is the transmission, you will have the option of repairing it, also known as rebuilding the transmission, or replacing it. It is much less expensive to rebuild it, so the mechanic will try this first.

Rebuilding the transmission involves removing the transmission from your car and opening it up. The mechanic will inspect all components to make sure everything is in good condition. The mechanic will clean the components. If the mechanic finds damaged components, they will replace them.

The mechanic will also replace worn out or damaged filters, valves, gaskets, clutch, and seals. When finished, they will inspect parts like the gears, casing, converters, and shafts for damage. If damage is found to any of these parts, they will be replaced.

The mechanic can use a device to check the transmission to ensure it is working properly, after they finish rebuilding it. If the test shows good, the mechanic will put the transmission back together and put it back into your car.

Talk to a transmission shop mechanic that is experienced in rebuilding transmissions and they can go over this information with you in much more detail.
